Someone who could tell the story better

2024 / mini-DV transferred to digital video with sound / 35 minutes

The film, Someone Who Could Tell the Story Better, traces a visit to the filmmaker’s grandmother in Finland to which she travels in search of a story. Having located a boat captured from the British Royal Navy during the Crimean War, the filmmaker posits this local icon of victory as the destination of homecoming and connection. Beneath the guise of wanting to make a documentary about the local artefact, she spends a week amongst relatives and distant friends, seeking to encapsulate their memory. In this time she meets a local historian and an archivist, who provide insights into the occasionally disordered maintenance of memory. Glimpses into conversations that occur in Finnish Swedish (a linguistic minority particularly present in the Ostrobothnian region of Finland) are interspersed with an English narration of diary entries written by the artist during her stay.
